March 6th 2013: Five Winter Favorites

Five Winter Favorites

Despite the bitter snowstorm we just had, winter is going to be coming to a close.  I'll be sad to see it go, but I'll be happy to get out of my leggings and be free with my dresses.  Although, I would like to state a few of my favorite things has been this past winter of 2012/2013.  It's been quite a fashionable winter for the world and I believe it needs some recognition and if you haven't gotten around to these fashions, well, you have a few weeks left!  Keep hopping!

1.  Collars peeking through sweaters.

It's been a clearly fashionable statement this winter, and I've used it several times.  It works especially with collared dresses.  Just slip the sweater over top of the dress, pull the collar up, and put some leggings on underneath.  I've even seen now where the collar is attachable like a pan collar accessory.  So, things to consider. Which sweaters are just an awement (Makayla word) of fashion anyways.  They're so fantastic, no girl should be without at least five or six sweaters. If you don't have any, Goodwill has the BEST sweaters.  Do NOT buy them new.

2.  Big cowl scarves.

I started knitting about three or four months ago and I've now knitted two cowl scarves.  One's a bit smaller than this one, but cowl scarves have been quite a hit this winter.  It's mostly fun because there's no hassle of trying to find a unique way to tie it.  You just wrap it around your neck and voila!  It's finished the look!  Not only though is it no hassle, but it's also very contributing to the whole ensemble of the winter look.  A big scarf?  Who could ask for more to stay warm?

3.  Boot socks.

Boot socks have been quite the cat's meow these days.  I know it doesn't seem like a complete outfit anymore without some socks peeking out from my boots, especially the slouched look in socks.  They work great for any length of boot, short or tall.  Just remember that sometimes it gets pretty toasty in the boot after a while, so beware to take off your shoes anywhere.

4.  Keeping the summer look while staying warm.

Don't pack away your shorts yet!  Shorts are a great use during the winter.  Just put a pair of leggings underneath and keep going!  Although, steer clear of any bright colored shorts.  That's too summery.  And me personally, I am not a fan of bright colors during the winter unless it can be dulled down with other colors because I might wear mint colored pants but then I pair it off with a gray sweater.  Winter is meant to be dull, dark, and dreary.  So join it but do it with great warmth in mind!

5.  Maxi skirts/dresses.

What?!  During the winter?!  Yes!  I'll admit I've only done it a few times, mostly while being home, but it's a great way to look fashionable but to secretly stay warm.  Slap on a pair of leggings or long johns underneath the skirt or dress and no one will ever know!  And even if they can see it, for a casual look, it'll still look good.  Remember, fashion is still nice to have during the winter but my main motto is: STAY WARM.  Layer up, scarf that neck, and put those earmuffs on!  Which, brings me to my qualm with puffer vests...maybe another time...actually...

P.S.  I found this great fashion book at Gabriel Brothers called Stylelikeu by Elisa Goodkind and Lily Mandelbaum.  It has extremely unique styles of people taken directly from their closets and their quotes to follow along with it.  I'll be quoting the book frequently from now on (when I get the time to write!!!)

"I think the best thing in the world is when you see someone walking down the street and the wind blows the right way, and suddenly it's like a scene and it's so perfect."- Ali Lovell
