It's interview time and you're stressed because you don't know what to wear!  Never fear, Makayla's here!

(Sorry, I've always wanted to do that : ]  )

The basics for an interview outfit are blazers or jackets and black.  I have never been a fan of brown outfits for an interview.  You're dressed to be sophisticated and brown screams nature to me.  Black is dressy, elegant, but down to business.  I also prefer skirts and dresses over pant suits, but this is only a matter of opinion.  I would wear a pant suit if it was in the dead of winter, so I have nothing against them at all.  It's just when given the opportunity, I will take skirts or dresses over them.  Panty hose is also suggested for it, but it is a dying art, panty hose, so I won't take it as an offense if you dislike them.  

The finish touch should subtle jewelry touches.  A ring, a simple necklace, a headband.  Nothing extravagant. Just subtle.  

The note I'd like to make on the ring though is that I bought it from a fabulous local business in Winchester, VA called The Purple Fern.  I suggest to anyone who is interested in eco-friendly items, homemade crafts, or just quirky items.  Top o' the morning then to ya!

Every other day, I try to dress up Doris (my dress form) to what I'd like to wear

that week.  And sometimes, Doris looks better in the outfits than I could ever look in them.  

I had the perfect outfit on Doris.  It was a blue and tan cardigan with a blue tank-top and tan shorts.

Problem?

Doris doesn't wear shoes, so I never thought that when I put on the outfit that I would have no shoes

to match it.
I was furious.  I was so stupid to forget a factor like that, so rushing around, I quickly remembered an outfit that I had put on Doris a few days before, so I ran to closet and dressed myself before 7:10 hit.

I was lucky to remember that, and I will say, ever since Doris came along, my outfit planning has been smoothed out to a clean road now.

March 22nd, 2012: What Would A Nerd Wear

Many people pull fashion from other inspirations.  My inspirations come from many sources,

including the t.v. show, "Jane By Design", Jessica Alba, Natalie Portman, Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page, Audrey Hepburn, Keira Knightley, Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen, Tumblr (what-do-i-wear.tumblr.com), and lastly, the blog that I follow closely, whatwouldanearwear.blogspot.com

What Would A Nerd Wear is a blog by a girl named Tania who has survived cancer, and she has since then risen above her past and has become a famous fashion blogger and is also working to get a phD in British literature.  If you wish to read her bio, http://whatwouldanerdwear.blogspot.com/p/about-me.html

Anyways, this outfit was inspired by her from this outfit.  It's not quite the same, but the similarities exist in the white-button shirt and a cardigan.  The rest was all me.  But anyways, I encourage people to read and follow her, especially if you are interested in English because she sometimes posts reading lists and lesson plans for teachers.  Happy reading!

March 20th, 2012: Oklahoma!

Simple, but pleasant.  That's what the look I like to go for 

when going to a show or a concert.  Simple but pleasant on the eyes.  I went 

to Potomac State College to go see "Oklahoma" (GO BAILEY!  WOOT WOOT!), one of my favorite plays  in Broadway history.  I've already seen "Oklahoma" a year ago with my sister for a Christmas present, so I was already familiar with the atmosphere of the play. 

Many people who came the last time at the Arena Theater dressed like it was a lunch date (it was a matinee). So, I kept that in mind.  

Theater attire is very important to keep in mind.  I went to see "Phantom of the Opera" at the Kennedy Center for a matinee and a girl showed up in her prom dress.  BIG NO-NO.  Or even worse, I was really embarrassed when my GHA family and I went to go see "Love Never Dies" at a late showing and we were still stinky and hot from the day and wearing our nasty yellow shirts...it was just embarrassing for all of us.  The people were looking at us weirdly, and I know that looks aren't everything, but I like to feel beautiful.  As I once told my Anatomy teacher, I like to command presence.  When I walk in a room, I want to be THAT girl.  The one that once you hear her high heels clicking, you sit up a little straighter than before without even realizing it.  

So, back to the subject, theater attire should consist of this:

Matinee- go with earth tones.  Browns, greens, tans.  Black is good, but black is more of a night thing.  Gray is also very good.  Wear cotton material.  Anything that even resembles silk is not suggested.  Maxis are the most genius things for matinees and evening showings.  It's elegant, yet relaxed.  Also, once it comes to jewelry, don't overdo it.  A simple belt, maybe a wooden bracelet, a small ring.   

Evening Show- Show off in a red or black outfit or both!  I have a marvelous red and black dress that goes well for theater.  In fact, I wore it to the La Scala in Milano to see an opera.  So, anything resembling silk, YES!  Little black dresses?  YES!  Flashy jewelry?  YES!  No prom dresses though.  Prom dresses aren't even stylish at the Oscar's.  And if you're wondering, yes, I do dislike prom dresses a teeny-bit, but I deal.  It's how I roll.

March 10th, 2012: The Future And What It Holds

Pink sweater shirt (Mom's closet, Forever 21 gray tank-top, American Eagle necklace, brown/olive green pants (They are the most deceiving pants in the world.  In some light, I will swear it cannot be green because they're so brown.  Other lights, it's so green that it can't be brown!!  AGHHH), Charlotte Russe Regret flats (I call them my Regret flats because I bought them out of anger and I regret buying them, but I can't take them back because a friend tore off the tags without me knowing), and gray socks.  

So, I was stopped this morning and asked what I was planning to do in the future.  Naturally, I said, "English Education."  She was shocked.  "You mean, you're doing fashion?"  

Good question.  

Why am I not doing fashion?

It's not because fashion isn't stable.  Fashion is a very stable job if you don't mind being under a company.  Now, if you wish to become an independent fashion designer, that's a whole other ballgame.  

It's because I can't sew.

I know.  It's crazy.  I can crochet...poorly....but it's something.  I can quilt.  But I can't sew...yet.  I hope to learn in the future, but right now, I don't have time, and I'll be graduating in three months.  I can't learn how to sew WELL in three months.  But I'm glad someone admired my abilities.  Thank you.  

Though my bucket list does consume a lot of fashion related items such as going to a fashion show, buying a Prada, Chanel, or Gucci bag, buying an entire Lauren Conrad outfit, meet Lauren Conrad one day and have her autograph all the clothes...okay, that last part I made up just now, but that is a pretty weird idea, huh?

March 6th, 2012: A Friend To A Friend

I went shopping with a few friends a while back at Goodwill and I told myself I was only going to buy a few things.  A few things turned into 3 skirts and a sweater, which adds up, believe me.  While we were shopping, I noticed that the skirt that I had bought in this picture looked exactly as the one that my friend had on.  So, I call it a friend to friend look.  It's okay to steal looks, honestly, people.  I feel flattered when someone steals a look.  It's not a disgrace, don't look down upon someone for doing either.  

Heck, I used to admire a girl in my sophomore class (which by the way, I owe ALL of my fashion sense to her.  Without her, I would not who I am with clothes today).  She always was dressed very tastefully.  She wasn't fashionable in no sense, but everything she wore was with taste.  So, I tried to "copy" her style a bit.  I began to notice things a lot better, and a new Makayla been evolved.  So, you see, I still am who I am, I just needed a little nudge from another person to do so.  

Copying a look is not a big deal.  Copying a lifestyle, now that is a whole other story.

Surprises, surprises!  Number one, I got home and I discovered my birthday present had arrived finally in the mail!!!!

So, I've been having a little bit of fun with my new best friend, Doris, and yeah.  I discovered my Dad's shirts are a good source of long t-shirts, and I got to sleep in and drive to school.  Fab.

February 15th, 2012: Valentine's Day Dumps

Day after Valentine's Day...feeling the sickness, I know.  You've probably sat up all night with your girls, crying your eyes out to man-bashing films, and eating ice cream.  At least, that's what I did.  So now you're feeling the after effect of Valentine's Day.  You're realizing you're lonely, you feel that you're overlooked.  I mean, if ugly girls can get a man, why can't you, right?

My advice?

Eh.  Look at this way.  I know.  It stinks, but you got a whole wardrobe full of clothes that will never betray you.  They love you, and the clothes want to be worn.  You have food in your cupboards that want to be eaten because they love you and they know you can't survive without it.  You have a bed that loves you and it never wants to be separated from you.  

Pretty crazy once you get to thinking about it, I know, but it cheers me up.

I really can't tell you how much this skirt is actually pretty awesome.  It's not exactly one that you would automatically pick up in the store, but it was certainly worth $4!  

The thing is for today, I didn't feel too well today, but fashion always makes me feel better.

Sure, I may not have a man in my life or the greatest grades or a killer body, but I have fabulous closet full of clothes and that cheers me up every time.

February 1st, 2012: Dads Are The Best!

Lucus calls it the "Fruit Loop Sweater."  Well, I think it was a grade A find in Goodwill.  Here's the story.  So my whole family hops in the car to go practice parallel parking for me when my sister and my dad want to be dropped off at Goodwill.  So, mom and I went driving for a while, and then I went into Goodwill to go get my sister and dad.  Well, I came out, I had an armful of clothing.  I can NOT go into a Goodwill and not drool.  It's just not possible.  The best part was that when I went to pay, my daddy paid for both my sister's and my 

stuff.  Sure, we're his kryptonite.  But he's also my daddy!  And I love him!  Anyways, it was also my first day in heels at school.  And it wasn't bad.  I actually enjoyed it.  The only part I didn't like was that I was slower in my pace getting to classes which a major downfall when you want to be early.  But fashion is all about sacrificing for the look you want, especially for those daily compliments that you so long for every day.  <3

January 31st, 2012: Mom's Closet

I know I may be weird for saying so, but I love finding goodies in my Mom's closet.  This sweater though has survived a lot.  My mom has had this sweater for 20+ years and it still is in tact.  This only shocks me because my mom is pretty harsh once it comes to washing clothes.  She may be the greatest at getting out stains, but she's very harsh on everything else.  So, the sweater's a literal vintage piece.  Go Mom!  She had style in the 80's (I'm still working on getting her out of it now, but she's improving!  Very much so!).  So advice for my peeps out there: Mom's closet isn't as scary as you think it is.  She'll never mind you borrowing her clothes because it's almost a compliment.  She'll think she's hip because you're borrowing her clothes now!  So find that one thing, spice it up, and go with it!

January 26th, 2012: One Girl's Junk Is Another's Treasure

My sister was into riding horses when we were younger.  She had decided that dressage was more of her style, so Mom bought her a whole outfit for Dressage riding attire.  

As the years flew by, my sister's horse died and so on and so forth, and the jacket somehow still managed to stay in her closet.  Now that she has left the nest, I have expanded my closet into hers.  Problem?  Her clothes were still there.

So, over time, I have gotten quite creative with the outfits I can create with her "junk."  So, I call this one of these moments of trash to treasure.  

January 24, 2012: Be Proud, Never Slouch

So, today was a tough day.  I haven't had a very good week so far (you can tell by just having a Monday) and I just needed a good outfit to cheer me up.  So, I pulled out my Mom's weird brown boots.  Why not?  I've got nothing else to lose.  So, I wore them.  As awkward as they are, I love them.  I loved the sound they made while I was walking in the hallways and the way they hugged my legs.  Sure, I heard a few whispers today at school about how weird they looked, but I found that wearing something that I loved that other people didn't made me feel like a rock star.  Don't ask why, but it did.

So, be proud, never slouch.  Show off whatever things you like.  I am a firm believer in wearing whatever you wish if it compliments your personality and if you absolutely love it.

January 19th, 2012: The Story Of The Genie Shoes

So, to begin my story, we'll have to rewind my life to at least five to six years ago.  My sister (God love her) had went shopping and brought back these hideous looking Genie shoes.  I mean, during this time of 2005-2006, flats were NOT in.  In 2005 and 2006, I can remember desperately wanting a pair of clog shoes and converses.  My sister is not at all the eccentric type either to go and wear something so daring either.  So, they sat around for several years.  Sure, my sister wore them about once or twice, but never enough to actually say that they were special. 

When my sister moved out to go to college, she left me with them.  Still, the shoes were in style, so they sat around in my closet.  Neglected.

Then one morning, it just hit me.  

THE SHOES WERE PERFECT!  

And they are!  I'm always so gracious to wake up in the morning to find that I'm actually somewhat grateful my sister is a pack rat.  If not, the shoes would be here to perfect my outfits.  And that's the story of the Genie shoes. 

January 17th, 2012: That One Jacket

My friend and I have agreed that every person should have that one jacket that goes with everything.  It's the jacket that when you wake in the morning that you feel happy that it's in your closet.  That jacket that you make love to with your eyes.  

My Converse Tan Jacket is that one.  It's so wonderful!  I love it so much!  And I should!  For the price I paid for it.  It has certainly been one of the rare splurges I spent.  Of course, to other people, it might not be a lot, but it is to me.  

The red pants, on the other hand, was not much of a pleasurable buy for me.  I had bought them a loooooong time ago (almost four years ago) when I was still an "emo" kid.  I wore them once as an emo kid, and then they just sat on my shelf.  For.  Ever.  

So, I looked and combined.  Looked and combined.  Repeat.  Repeat.  Repeat.  

Finally.

It hit me.  

THE JACKET!

AND IT WORKED!  HALLELUJAH!

That jacket has now saved face once again.

To talk about the rest of my outfit, the watch was only a sale for $3 and has come quite in handy.

And lastly the scarf was a gift from my grandma.  She has fabulous taste!

Many people have thought that my parents make a lot of money to buy the clothes I wear.  I'm going to tell you a secret...

They don't.  ; )

So, wait, you're thinking.  What about all your clothing?  Here's the next secret.

I shop cheap.

 : O !!!

NO!  

Yes!  

So, I'm going to teach you how I shop.  It might not be THE best way, but I manage and for the most part, I do well.  

So to begin, here is a list of stores I typically shop at:

1. Charlotte Russe.  I adore Charlotte Russe with a passion.  They have awesome sales and their clothing is extremely fashionable.  A note to remember in Charlotte Russe is that the clothes don't look that great on the rack, but when you put them on, they're fabulous.

2. Goodwill.  Obviously!  I love Goodwill!  I especially love Goodwills in larger cities because the richer people drop off their clothes and then you get them for an extreme knocked down price.

3. Forever 21.  There are no Forever 21s in my area, but I do order online from them and when I can, I'll shop at Wolftrap in Virginia with my sister.

4. JC Penny's.  Believe or not, JC Penny's has THE best sales ever on clothing, especially if you're signed with their company.  Mom gets coupons and such all the time from them, and her birthday is the best time because she gets the big percentages then. 

5. Wet Seal.  I love Wet Seal occasionally.  Their clothing is sometimes too preppy for my taste, but I do love their 1 penny sale thing.  It's always on, and sometimes you can get really good deals when you can play your cards right.

6.  White Oak Consignments.  It's a local store in town, and the store sells second hand designer clothes.  Sometimes the prices can be steep because of the name brand, but they have awesome sales on their shoes and jewelry.  If you can find a local consignment shop near you, I encourage it.  Always go local if in doubt.  

7. My favorite online store: Etsy.com.  LOVE ETSY!  They sell vintage and homemade clothing.  I will have to say, I only buy from it for birthdays and Christmases because I'm a cheapo, and I don't care to spend over $15 on a shirt.  And that's stretching it for me.  

8. Icing.  Icing is a spin-off store of Claire's.  I do like Claire's, but I enjoy Icing much better because Icing carries more vintage looking and sophisticated items.  It is expensive, so I usually put things from Icing on my wishlists.  

9. TJ Maxx.  I LOVE TJ MAXX!  Period.  : )  

10. Gabriel Brothers.  Need I say more?

11. H&M.  I always shop at H&M when I am in the big cities such as New York, Chicago, or Milan because there are no H&M's our area, and this upsets me because they're fabulous!

I do shop in American Eagle when they're having jewelry sales, but that is it.  I admire American Eagle clothing, but I always feel that I can never pull it off.  I also admire Urban Outfitters from a distance, as well as Dehlia's.  I also enjoy Old Navy, but Old Navy is a little too preppy for my style.  I also shop in Hot Topic in the clearance section for things such as hairpieces and always old habits never die (being a former emo kid, the things they have still fascinate me.)  

Stores I NEVER Shop In: Hollister, New York & Company (I do buy NY&C at White Oak), Pac Sun, Fashion Bug, Abercrombie And Fitch, Journey's, etc.  

Why?  Because they overprice clothing that honestly...doesn't look good.  I have NEVER liked anything Hollister ever put out, and that goes for many of the other stores.  I have only liked a few things Pac Sun carried, but I could buy the same quality of shirts that were more fashionable at Charlotte Russe.  I have never understand the love of Hollister clothing nor will I ever.  I have determined that people that shop at Hollister are people who don't have time to be fashionable, so they just shop in there because it's a famous name brand  store.  And that's my hypothesis.  

Some other shopping tips to keep in mind (credit due to what-do-i-wear.tumblr.com):  

1. Do your research.

‘Research tip’ browse online before you go. This way you can compare prices and since most of the stores nowadays have online stores or at least lookbooks of their collection, you’ll learn which stores are going to be worth your visit and which ones aren’t.

2. Make a wishlist.

Nothing can be more distracting than mountains of clothing and those crazy colored sale signs. Therefor it’s a must to create a list of all things you need and things you really want. If you see something in the store that you didn’t put on the list, it’s not an option to take it home with you. Remember to keep next season in mind when making this list, try to get pieces that will either match the trends next season or pieces that are timeless.

3. Set a budget.

It’s best to set a budget for three different types of pieces. Set a price limit for items that are actual essentials (basics that you ‘really’ need), one for items that you have to have and an ultimate price limit, for that one single designer piece that forces you to eat bread and drink water for a whole month. Once you’ve reached your ultimate price limit, it’s time to go home.

4. Prepare.

Wear the right clothing during sale shopping. Something comfy, something that is easy to take off and put back on again. You don’t want to be in those changing rooms, getting frustrated about the super tight jeans you’re wearing, just because you can’t get them off. If you’re on the hunt for the perfect shirt to match with a particular pair of pants, wear those pants.

5. Be an early bird.

When sale starts, get up and be the first in front of your favorite stores. This way you’ll snatch the best items, before someone else does.

6. When in doubt, don’t buy.

If you wouldn’t consider an item at full price, don’t even bother to get it in sale. 

7. If it doesn’t fit, don’t buy.

Always try it on. I have all kinds of sizes in my closet. From a European 40 to an American size 2. When an item is labeled as L, it doesn’t mean it fits that way. If an item doesn’t fit you right, don’t bother to take it home with you. The fact that it isn’t right for you, doesn’t change once you get home.

8. Check for holes and such.

Especially during the sale period, there’s a lot of items to be found in stores with wholes, missing buttons, etc. Do an extra check – it’s best to check when trying on – before you run off to the cash register.

9. Go for basics and lovers.

It’s best to buy your basics during sale. This way, you can afford a basic that is a little more expensive. Basics stay the same every single season and it’s better to invest in a basic that is made of better quality than to have to buy them again every half a year. 

10. Break one of the above rules.

January 13, 2012: Friday The 13th

Friday The 13th 

So, today was not of a very fashionable day because it being so blustery today.  A true Friday the 13th when it can even ruin fashion.  I only wore a sweatshirt thing my teacher had given me, a clock necklace from Icing, my regular jeans, and black Ugg boots.  I hate Ugg boots.  I really do, but they're comfortable and warm.  Until I find another type of boots that are comfortable and warm like Uggs, but yet fashionable, they're going on my debit card.  

Moving on though, since this is a fashion blog, I'd like everyone to recognize this fabulous show that previewed on ABC Family.  I'm trying to get all of my friends to watch, but so far, I have not had very good luck with it.    

Anyways, story plot goes as this:

Jane Quinby is a high school student.  She feels a bit out of place at school because of her creativity skills and awkwardness.  So, she applies for a job as an intern at a fashion company.  Turns out, she applies for an executive assistant, a real world job in which no one can know then that she is a high school student.   

Sure, it's not too realistic, but the fashion is amazing.  And to be in that world....oh...it makes me tingly inside.

H&M Print Shirt (It's actually a short dress, but I just tucked it in), Sears skirts, Charlotte Russe brown leggings, and Report flats.

I know I'm not very winter friendly, but believe me, I'm the biggest cardigan fan ever.  You will eventually see some of my cardigans on my outfits.  I just haven't got around to them yet.  : )  

P.S. That skirt is amazing.  It has POCKETS!  Fashion is amazing, but when you have cool things to surprise you, it makes it 10x cooler!

Arizona Black Button Up Dress Shirt, Tan Shorts (I've had them since I was in the fifth grade...a bit sad, I know), black tights, American Eagle black flats, Claire's headband

People always ask me, "Aren't you cold in tights?"  

My answer?

"Dude, they're warmer."

And I'm not lying.  

It may be the dead of winter, but if I had a choice between tights or pants, I'm going with tights.

They're soooo much warmer.  It may hard to argue, but I think there is a scientific reason why tights are warmer, I just haven't figured it out yet.

I'm really upset though because my regular black leggings got a huge hole in them, and I tried to cut into them to make the rest of them look like it, but then Mom threw them away.  >.>  

So, I'm hoping for my birthday, I'll get new leggings.  

I really need to build on my leggings/tight collection.  So, if you want to know what to get me for any occasion, that is what I want.  : )
